Brief history of the city:
Hradec Kralove is one of the oldest towns in the Czech Republic. The Hradec elevation
was fortified for the first time 3500-4000 years BCE.
Permanent fortification was established probably at the end of the ninth century CE and Hradec Králové was first mentioned as a free royal town in 1225 in the deed of King Přemysl Otakar I.
At the beginning of the thirteenth century, Hradec Králové became the dowry town of Czech queens. In 1307, Elisabeth Richeza, double widow of King Wenceslas II and Rudolph I, established Hradec Králové as her seat.
In the 1420s, Hradec Králové was one of the first towns supporting the Hussites and gradually became their most important seat.
In 1664, the diocese of Hradec Králové was created. Two visits by Pope John Paul II at the end of the twentieth century validated the important historical role of the town.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, Hradec Králové adopted a revolutionary urban plan for its time. From this plan, many exceptional buildings designed by important architects (Jan Kotěra, Josef Gočár, Oldřich Liska, Otakar Novotný, Jan Rejchl, etc.) were built, and the town became known as the "Salon of the Republic".
